Transfer Necktie Flag Patterns to Create Dozens of Unique Custom Gifts
Celebrate their Heritage or Culture In a Few Short Steps
In this step-by-step guide, you’ll learn how to transfer a flag pattern from a necktie to other products using Zazzle’s online designer. We’ll start with a Jamaica flag tie and apply the design to a bandana, then move on to a duffel bag where you’ll see how to add a monogram. The tutorial includes screenshots documenting each action and click, but the process only takes a few minutes. A downloadable PDF guide is available at the bottom of this page. Example 1: Transferring from Necktie to Bandana
Step 1
Start by going to the product page of the Jamaica flag necktie. On that page, scroll down to "Transfer design to a product" section.
Step 2
Click on the "View all products" box on the left-hand side.
Step 3
On the "Choose a Product" page enter "bandana" in the search field.
Step 4
Click on the large bandana image displayed in the search results.
Step 5
You will be taken to the bandana product page, and the Jamaica flag pattern will be transferred to it. Click EDIT THIS DESIGN.
Step 6
In the Zazzle online designer, opened the left panel by clicking on the LAYERS icon. If the pattern tile is not selected on the art board, click on it in the LAYERS panel. Next, magnify the art board by clicking several times on the + symbol of the zoom controller.
Step 7
In the right-hand panel, locate the ROTATE option and change it from -30 to 0. The angle of the pattern on the art board will shift, aligning better with the edges of the bandana.
Step 8
Now go to the TILING pulldown menu at the top of the screen. On the right side of the TILING options menu, change the tile size to 3 inches. Note the height and width measurements are identical. Since I always design with square tiles, these numbers should be equal. On the art board, the pattern will enlarge. Now let's preview our changes, by clicking on the PREVIEW window.
Step 9
With such a simple product, it's almost not necessary to examine the preview, but it's a good habit to get into. Click the X in the upper right-hand corner to return to the art board.
Step 10
Now that the design is complete, click the DONE button.
Step 11
Click ADD TO CART to begin the purchase process.
Example 2: Transferring from Necktie to Duffel Bag
Step 12
We'll need to return to the Jamaica flag necktie product page to restart the transfer process. As before, scroll down to "Transfer design to a product."
Step 13
Click the "View all products" box.
Step 14
Enter "duffel bag" into the search field.
Step 15
Click the large duffel bag image displayed in the search results.
Step 16
You will be taken to the duffel bag product page and the Jamaica flag pattern will have been transferred. Click EDIT THIS DESIGN.
Step 17
In Zazzle designer, open the LAYERS panel and select the Jamaica flag pattern tile, if it is not already selected. Next, change the ROTATE setting from -30 to 0. The angle of the pattern on the art board will shift.
Step 18
Now click on the TILING pulldown menu. Dimensions in the TILE SIZE boxes should be equal since I always design pattern tiles as squares. This error occasionally happens during the transfer process.
Step 19
To correct the issue, click on the chain-link icon between the two dimension boxes. This will allow you to change the width and height individually. Now enter 2.5 in each box to increase the size of the pattern and to correct the transfer error. This will enlarge the pattern on the art board.
Step 20
Now we need to update the pattern on the other layers of the duffel bag. On the art board, right-click on the selected tile and choose COPY. Then, in the layers panel choose BACK.
Step 21
Now on the back layer, right-click on the selected tile on the art board. Choose DELETE.
Step 22
Right-click on the empty art board and choose PASTE. The updated pattern is now on the back of the duffel bag.
Step 23
In the LAYERS panel, choose the LEFT layer.
Step 24
Right-click in the empty left layer, and choose PASTE to place the pattern onto the side of the duffel bag.
Step 25
With the tile selected on the art board, go to the TILING pulldown menu at the top of the screen. Note that the TILE SIZE dimensions are not 2.5 inches as they were on the front layer. I think the system assumes you want your patterns to be proportionate to the size of the layer. However, I prefer to have the pattern's size to be consistent on all sides. (You may decide differently.) For this example, let's enter 2.5 inches and make the pattern consistent throughout. You'll notice that the pattern enlarges on the art board.
Step 26
Now right-click on the selected tile in the art board, and choose COPY.
Step 27
In the LAYERS panel, choose the RIGHT layer.
Step 28
Right-click on the empty art board and choose PASTE.
Step 29
Return to the front layer by clicking on it in the LAYERS panel.
Step 30
Now let's add a monogram to the duffel bag. First we'll need to create a background element so the monogram will be readable within the pattern. Let's start by opening the ELEMENTS panel on the left side of the screen.
Step 31
Enter "diamond" in the search field and then select the horizontal diamond shaped element among the search results. A large gray diamond has been placed on the art board.
Step 32
With the diamond element selected on the art board, click FILL COLOR in the right panel. Then, click on the black color swatch.
Step 33
Select BORDER COLOR. (With FILL COLOR options open, you may need to scroll down in the right panel to see the BORDER COLOR option.) Then, click on the eyedropper tool.
Step 34
With the eyedropper tool, click on an area in the art board that is green. This allows you to select a matching color from the pattern to use as the border on the diamond shape. (We could have used the eyedropper tool to set the FILL COLOR as well, but I decided to use solid black since that was obviously a matching color in the Jamaica flag.)
Step 35
Size the diamond shape using the SCALE option in the right panel by clicking the - symbol (or the + symbol if it needs to be larger). To add the monogram itself, click on the TEXT option in the left panel.
Step 36
Now click ADD TEXT, and enter three initials in the pop-up screen. Click OK.
Step 37
With the text selected, in the right side panel customize the text by selecting font options, color and size. There are several other options that you can experiment with. Once you have the text formatted, drag and position it centered over the background diamond shape.
Step 38
While holding down your shift key, in the left-hand panel, click on the monogram and the diamond element. Then, on the art board, right-click over the monogram and choose GROUP. This will allow you to position both together.
Step 39
In the pulldown menu at the top of the screen, select ALIGN and choose the align center icon with the "align to" option set to art board. This should make sure your monogram is centered between the handles of the duffel bag. Now take a moment to review the design by clicking the preview window.
Step 40
Review the various sides of the duffel bag by clicking on the preview thumbnails on the left side. Click the X in the upper right-hand corner to close the preview window.
Step 41
Back on the art board screen, click DONE to complete the transfer of the pattern from the necktie to a newly personalized duffel bag.
Step 42
Click ADD TO CART to begin the purchase process.
