Albania Flag: The Double-Headed Eagle and the Spirit of Skanderbeg

The national flag of Albania is a bold and striking symbol featuring a black double-headed eagle centered on a red background. This design dates back to the 15th century and is associated with the national hero, Gjergj Kastrioti—better known as Skanderbeg—who led a rebellion against the Ottoman Empire.

The double-headed eagle, originally a Byzantine imperial symbol, was adopted by Skanderbeg as his personal coat of arms. It represented vigilance and authority over both East and West, symbolizing Albania’s strategic and cultural position in the Balkans.

The red field of the flag stands for bravery, strength, and the blood of martyrs who died fighting for Albania’s freedom. The flag was officially adopted on November 28, 1912, when Albania declared independence from the Ottoman Empire.

Throughout the 20th century, the flag underwent minor changes. Under communist rule (1946–1992), a gold five-pointed star was added above the eagle to reflect the socialist ideology. However, this star was removed in 1992 with the fall of communism and the restoration of a democratic government.

Today, the Albanian flag remains one of the most recognizable in the world due to its simplicity and deep historical roots. It is flown proudly on national holidays, especially Independence Day, and serves as a symbol of national pride, resilience, and identity.
