Ghana Flag: A Pan-African Emblem of Freedom and Strength
The flag of Ghana was adopted on March 6, 1957, the same day the country became the first sub-Saharan African nation to gain independence. It consists of three horizontal stripes—red, yellow, and green—with a black five-pointed star in the center of the yellow band.
Red symbolizes the blood of those who died in the fight for independence, yellow represents the country’s mineral wealth, and green stands for forests and natural resources. The black star signifies African freedom and unity and is inspired by the Black Star Line, a shipping company founded by Pan-Africanist Marcus Garvey.
Designed by Theodosia Okoh, the flag has inspired other African nations and remains a strong national and continental symbol. It is prominently flown during Independence Day and sporting events, particularly football.
