Libya Flag: The Crescent and Star Restored

The current flag of Libya, adopted in 2011 following the fall of Muammar Gaddafi’s regime, features a horizontal tricolor of red, black, and green with a white crescent and star in the center of the black band.

The flag was originally used by the Kingdom of Libya from 1951 to 1969. Red represents the Fezzan region, black for Cyrenaica, and green for Tripolitania—symbolizing the unity of Libya’s historic provinces. The crescent and star represent Islam and national identity.

This flag replaced Gaddafi’s all-green flag and was embraced during the Libyan Civil War as a symbol of liberation. It continues to represent the hopes for peace, democracy, and national unity.
